Dulse (Palmaria palmata) is a red seaweed that has been used traditionally as a food and folk remedy in coastal regions, particularly in Ireland, Scotland, and parts of Canada. Its use to support or treat anemia is primarily based on its relatively high mineral content, especially iron, which is an essential nutrient for hemoglobin synthesis in red blood cells. In traditional medicine, iron-rich foods have often been recommended to help prevent or alleviate symptoms of iron-deficiency anemia. Dulse contains not only iron but also other micronutrients like vitamin B12 and folate, which are important for red blood cell production. However, the bioavailability of iron from plant and seaweed sources is generally lower than from animal sources, and there is limited clinical evidence to suggest that dulse alone can effectively treat or prevent anemia in humans.
