Fu Ling (Poria cocos, also known as Tuckahoe or China root) is a fungus traditionally used in Chinese herbal medicine. Its primary use has been to promote urination, strengthen the spleen, and calm the mind. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), anemia is often associated with deficiencies in the spleen and blood. Fu Ling is sometimes included in complex formulas aimed at addressing these deficiencies because it is believed to strengthen the spleen and aid in transforming dampness, which is thought to indirectly support blood production. However, Fu Ling itself is not considered a direct hematinic (blood-building) agent in TCM. Rather, its role is adjunctive within multi-herb formulas, such as Si Jun Zi Tang, that are used for conditions associated with spleen qi deficiency, which may include some types of anemia.
There is little to no direct scientific evidence supporting Fu Ling’s effectiveness in treating anemia. Most modern pharmacological studies have focused on its diuretic, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties rather than hematopoietic effects. Thus, its use for anemia is rooted in traditional practice and theory rather than scientific validation. The evidence rating of 1 reflects its use in tradition, but with minimal direct evidence from scientific research or clinical studies to support its effectiveness in treating anemia specifically.
