Garden cress (Lepidium sativum) is traditionally consumed in several cultures for its health benefits, including the treatment of anemia. More recently, scientific studies have investigated its efficacy, focusing on its high iron content. Anemia is often caused by iron deficiency, and garden cress seeds are recognized for their rich iron content (estimated around 100 mg per 100 g of seeds), along with significant amounts of folic acid and vitamin C, which enhance iron absorption.

Several small clinical and laboratory studies support its benefit. For instance, a study published in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology (2012) demonstrated that daily supplementation of garden cress seeds improved hemoglobin levels in adolescent girls with iron-deficiency anemia over eight weeks. Other studies have confirmed the bioavailability of iron from garden cress seeds and their effectiveness in improving iron status compared to standard iron supplements.

Despite these promising findings, the evidence base remains limited due to small sample sizes and a lack of large-scale, long-term randomized controlled trials. However, the combination of its traditional use and preliminary scientific validation supports its role as a dietary adjunct in managing iron-deficiency anemia. It is important to note that, while promising, garden cress should not replace conventional therapies for moderate to severe anemia without medical supervision.
