"Greens blends," which are proprietary mixtures of powdered vegetables, grasses, algae (like spirulina or chlorella), and sometimes herbs, are often marketed as supporting energy, vitality, and sometimes anemia. The justification for their use in anemia is rooted more in traditional and nutritional logic than in robust scientific validation. Historically and in nutritional practice, leafy green vegetables (such as spinach and kale) have been identified as sources of non-heme iron, folate, and vitamin C—all nutrients relevant to the prevention or management of anemia, particularly iron-deficiency anemia. However, the non-heme form of iron in greens is less bioavailable than heme iron from animal sources, and absorption can be inhibited by compounds like phytates or oxalates present in many greens. Some blends include vitamin C–rich ingredients, which may enhance iron absorption modestly. While there are clinical studies supporting the general importance of iron and folate for anemia, there is limited direct scientific research on the efficacy of commercial greens blends specifically for treating or preventing anemia.
