Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Human growth hormone (hGH) is not a primary treatment for anemia, but there is some scientific evidence supporting its role in specific situations. Human growth hormone stimulates the production of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which can promote erythropoiesis (the formation of red blood cells) by increasing erythropoietin production and enhancing the proliferation of erythroid progenitor cells. This effect is most notable in patients with growth hormone deficiency, chronic kidney disease (CKD), or those with certain chronic illnesses where anemia is present and traditional treatments are insufficient.

Clinical research has shown that recombinant hGH therapy can improve anemia in children with chronic renal failure and those with growth hormone deficiency. Some studies indicate that hGH may reduce the need for erythropoietin-stimulating agents in these populations. However, the effectiveness of hGH in treating anemia outside these specialized contexts is limited, and its use is not standard practice for anemia in the general population. The evidence base is modest (rated 2 out of 5), with most guidelines recommending hGH only when indicated for underlying hormone deficiency, not as a primary therapy for anemia.

In summary, while there is a mechanistic and clinical rationale for hGH to support erythropoiesis in select patient groups, its use for anemia is scientifically validated only in specific contexts and not for general anemia management.
