Hygrophila, particularly the species Hygrophila auriculata (commonly known as "Kokilaksha" in Ayurvedic medicine), has been traditionally used in Indian systems of medicine to support blood health and treat conditions such as anemia. The use of Hygrophila for anemia is primarily justified by traditional claims, particularly in Ayurveda, where it is considered a "rasayana" (rejuvenative) herb believed to improve overall vitality and blood quality. Some traditional texts and practitioners recommend formulations containing Hygrophila for managing anemia-related symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and pallor.
On the scientific front, there is limited but emerging evidence. A few animal studies have indicated that extracts of Hygrophila auriculata may have hematinic effects, possibly by promoting erythropoiesis or improving hemoglobin levels in experimentally induced anemic models. However, these studies are preliminary, mostly limited to animal models, and there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans.
