Kokilaksha (Asteracantha longifolia, also known as Hygrophila auriculata) is a herb used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of health conditions, including anemia. The rationale for its use in anemia is primarily traditional. In Ayurveda, Kokilaksha is considered to have "rasayana" (rejuvenating) properties and is used in formulations such as “Punarnavadi Mandur,” which is prescribed for anemia (Pandu Roga) due to its purported ability to improve blood quality and promote hemoglobin synthesis. However, the direct evidence supporting its efficacy in the treatment of anemia is limited mostly to classical Ayurvedic texts and anecdotal reports.
There are few preclinical studies suggesting that extracts of Kokilaksha might possess hematinic (blood-forming) properties, but these studies are preliminary and typically conducted in animal models with limited sample sizes and without robust clinical trials in humans. These studies suggest possible increases in hemoglobin and red blood cell counts, but the mechanisms remain unclear and unconfirmed in human populations.
Overall, the use of Kokilaksha for anemia is rooted in traditional practice, and there is a moderate level of traditional evidence but very limited scientific validation. Its use should be considered as complementary and not a replacement for evidence-based medical treatment of anemia.
