Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Liquid liver fractions have a scientifically validated role in the treatment and support of certain types of anemia, particularly pernicious anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. The historical basis for this stems from the early 20th-century discovery that feeding raw liver to patients with pernicious anemia resulted in remarkable clinical improvement. This led to the isolation of vitamin B12, a critical nutrient found abundantly in animal liver, and the understanding that vitamin B12 deficiency was the underlying cause of this form of anemia. Liquid liver fractions are concentrated extracts of animal liver, typically bovine, and are rich in vitamin B12, iron, folate, and other micronutrients essential for red blood cell formation. Scientific studies throughout the mid-20th century demonstrated that liver extracts could reverse anemia in vitamin B12-deficient individuals, though injectable or oral crystalline B12 eventually replaced liver extracts as the standard of care due to greater efficacy and purity. Nevertheless, liver fractions may still be used as a nutritional supplement in some settings, particularly where access to pharmaceuticals is limited or as a natural source of heme iron and B12. The current scientific consensus supports the efficacy of liver fractions in treating specific nutritional anemias, especially before the era of modern B12 therapy, with a robust evidence base in historical clinical research.
