Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) have garnered attention for their potential role in supporting anemia, primarily due to their nutritional composition and some preliminary scientific studies. These mushrooms are a source of non-heme iron, which is important for hemoglobin synthesis in the body. Additionally, oyster mushrooms contain vitamin C, which may help enhance the absorption of non-heme iron from plant sources. Several in vitro and animal studies suggest that oyster mushrooms may increase hemoglobin levels and red blood cell counts when included in the diet. For instance, a study published in the Journal of Food Science and Technology (2015) found that iron-deficient rats fed with oyster mushroom powder exhibited improvements in hemoglobin and red blood cell indices compared to controls.
However, the current evidence from human clinical trials is very limited. Most of the research consists of small-scale animal studies or in vitro analyses rather than large, well-controlled trials in humans with anemia. While there are traditional uses of mushrooms in general for health support in some cultures, the specific use of oyster mushrooms for anemia is primarily justified by emerging scientific exploration rather than long-standing tradition. Thus, while oyster mushrooms could serve as a dietary adjunct for those at risk of iron deficiency anemia, they should not be considered a replacement for standard medical treatments.
