Plantain (Musa spp.), particularly the fruit, has traditional use in some cultures as a dietary adjunct in managing anemia. This is primarily because plantains are a source of dietary iron, vitamin C, and folate—nutrients involved in red blood cell production and hemoglobin synthesis. In regions where plantain is a staple, it is sometimes recommended as part of supportive diets for individuals with anemia, especially in combination with other iron-rich or vitamin C-rich foods to enhance non-heme iron absorption. Ethnobotanical records from West Africa and parts of Latin America mention the use of plantain in dietary strategies against anemia, but the evidence is largely anecdotal or based on dietary patterns rather than direct clinical testing.
Scientifically, while plantains contain some iron and vitamin C, their iron content is moderate, and bioavailability can be limited. There are very few clinical or preclinical studies specifically evaluating plantain’s efficacy in treating anemia.
