Sesame seeds are known to be a moderate source of non-heme iron, which is the form of iron found in plant-based foods. In Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, sesame seeds are often recommended as part of a diet to “build blood” and support those with symptoms of anemia, especially when combined with other iron-rich foods and herbs. However, scientific studies directly investigating sesame seeds as a treatment for anemia are limited.
