Vitamin A is scientifically validated as an adjunct in the treatment of certain types of anemia, particularly iron-deficiency anemia. Multiple studies have demonstrated that vitamin A plays a role in hematopoiesis (the formation of blood cells) and in mobilizing iron from storage sites to developing red blood cells. In populations where both vitamin A and iron deficiencies are prevalent, supplementation with vitamin A—alone or in combination with iron—has been shown to improve hemoglobin levels and reduce the prevalence of anemia more effectively than iron supplementation alone.

The biological rationale is that vitamin A influences iron metabolism by enhancing intestinal absorption of iron, facilitating its release from storage sites in the liver, and increasing erythropoiesis (production of red blood cells). Several randomized controlled trials, particularly in children and pregnant women in developing countries, have found that vitamin A supplementation can significantly reduce anemia rates. For example, a meta-analysis published in the journal Nutrition Reviews (2010) concluded that vitamin A supplementation results in a modest but significant improvement in hemoglobin concentrations.

However, the effect is greatest in populations with underlying vitamin A deficiency. For individuals with adequate vitamin A status, supplementation has little to no impact on anemia. Thus, while scientific evidence supports the role of vitamin A in treating anemia, especially where deficiencies overlap, it is best considered as an adjunct to—not a replacement for—iron therapy.
