Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin B6 (various)
For the health condition: Anger (excessive)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has been studied in relation to mood regulation and certain psychiatric symptoms, including irritability and anger. Its role in neurotransmitter synthesis—specifically serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)—is well established, and deficiencies can lead to neuropsychiatric symptoms. Some small-scale studies and case reports have suggested that Vitamin B6 supplementation may help reduce irritability, emotional instability, and even aggressive behavior, particularly in individuals with underlying deficiencies or premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
For example, research on PMS and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) has shown that Vitamin B6 supplementation (usually 50–100 mg/day) can reduce symptoms such as irritability and mood swings, which may include excessive anger. There is also some preliminary evidence in children with behavioral disorders (such as autism) showing improvement in irritability and aggression with B6 supplementation, often in combination with magnesium.
However, the overall scientific evidence is limited, with most studies being small, lacking placebo controls, or focusing on broader symptoms rather than anger specifically. Large, high-quality randomized controlled trials are lacking. Therefore, while there is some scientific basis for the use of Vitamin B6 to support conditions involving excessive anger—particularly when deficiency is present or in PMS—the evidence remains modest and not robust.
