For the health condition: Angina
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
The use of the Arjun tree (Terminalia arjuna) for supporting or treating angina is supported by both traditional Ayurvedic medicine and a growing body of scientific evidence. Traditionally, the bark of the Arjun tree has been used in India for centuries as a cardiac tonic, particularly for heart-related ailments such as angina pectoris and heart failure. In recent decades, several clinical and preclinical studies have investigated its efficacy and mechanisms of action. Research indicates that extracts of Arjun bark possess cardioprotective properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering effects. Small clinical trials and animal studies have found that Terminalia arjuna may improve cardiac function, reduce the frequency and severity of angina attacks, and enhance exercise tolerance in patients with stable angina. The beneficial effects are thought to be due to the presence of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, which may help improve coronary artery blood flow, reduce myocardial oxygen demand, and protect against ischemic damage. However, while the data are promising and suggest efficacy, the quality and scale of clinical trials remain limited compared to well-established pharmaceutical interventions. Thus, while scientific evidence supports the traditional use and indicates potential benefits, larger, well-designed human trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety profile for angina management.
