Evidence supporting the use of: Arjuna
For the health condition: Angina
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Terminalia arjuna, commonly known as Arjuna, has a long traditional history in Ayurvedic medicine for the management of various cardiovascular conditions, including angina. Scientifically, several studies have investigated its efficacy in treating angina pectoris. Clinical trials, including randomized controlled and open-label studies, have indicated that standardized extracts of Arjuna bark can reduce the frequency and severity of angina attacks and improve exercise tolerance in patients with stable angina. Proposed mechanisms include antioxidant properties, improvement in endothelial function, and positive effects on lipid profiles. Some studies have compared Arjuna favorably with conventional antianginal medications, such as isosorbide mononitrate, though sample sizes are often small and the studies sometimes lack rigorous blinding.
The evidence supporting Arjuna’s use in angina is stronger than for many herbal products, but is still considered moderate due to limitations such as small sample sizes, short study durations, and variability in product standardization. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews note a trend toward benefit, but also emphasize the need for larger, multicenter trials to confirm efficacy and safety. Thus, while Arjuna’s use for angina is supported by both traditional usage and emerging clinical data, it should be seen as an adjunct to — not a replacement for — conventional therapy, and always under medical supervision.
