Evidence supporting the use of: Arjunic acid
For the health condition: Angina
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Arjunic acid is a triterpenoid compound isolated from the bark of Terminalia arjuna, a tree widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. The bark of Terminalia arjuna has a longstanding history for the management of cardiovascular conditions, particularly angina pectoris (chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart). Historical Ayurvedic texts and traditional practices cite the use of arjuna bark as "hridya" (cardioprotective), and preparations containing the bark have been prescribed for improving cardiac function and alleviating symptoms associated with angina.
While the bark extract as a whole has undergone some clinical investigation suggesting potential benefit in angina, most studies have used crude extracts, not isolated arjunic acid. There is limited direct scientific data specifically on arjunic acid for angina—most of the evidence supporting its use is based on traditional knowledge and the broader pharmacological profile of arjuna bark. Preclinical research suggests arjunic acid may have antioxidant and cardioprotective properties, but robust clinical trials isolating its effects in human angina are lacking. Therefore, the evidence supporting arjunic acid specifically for angina is mostly traditional, with some indirect scientific rationale but insufficient high-quality clinical validation.
