Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Black galingale (Kaempferia parviflora) has a longstanding use in traditional Southeast Asian medicine, particularly in Thailand, where it is used for a variety of health purposes, including supporting cardiovascular health and alleviating symptoms consistent with angina (chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart). In traditional Thai medicine, black galingale is believed to improve blood circulation and vitality, which provides the rationale for its use in angina-like symptoms.

However, while some preclinical studies have shown that extracts of Kaempferia parviflora possess vasodilatory effects, improve endothelial function, and exhibit antioxidant properties in animal models, there is a lack of robust, high-quality clinical trials directly investigating its efficacy for angina in humans. Most of the scientific literature focuses on general cardiovascular effects, such as mild improvements in blood flow and blood pressure, rather than specifically on angina or ischemic heart disease. As such, its use for angina is primarily justified by traditional practice, with only limited scientific exploration and no clinical validation to date. Therefore, the evidence rating for its use in angina is low, reflecting the absence of direct human trials and reliance mainly on historical and anecdotal usage.
