Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Platycodon grandiflorus, commonly known as balloon flower, has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where its root (Platycodi Radix, "Jiegeng") is mainly prescribed for respiratory ailments such as cough, sore throat, and phlegm. In some traditional formulations, Platycodon is included in herbal mixtures prescribed for cardiovascular complaints, including angina-like chest discomfort, but it is not a primary or widely recognized herb for angina. The rationale for its inclusion is generally based on TCM principles of "opening up" the lungs and chest, promoting the movement of qi (vital energy), and resolving phlegm, which are sometimes interpreted as supporting heart function or alleviating chest tightness.

Scientifically, there is very limited direct evidence supporting the use of Platycodon for angina or other ischemic heart conditions. Most research focuses on its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and expectorant properties. Some preclinical studies suggest potential cardiovascular effects, such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, but these are not specific to angina nor have they been substantiated in human clinical trials for this indication. Therefore, while traditional use exists within the broader context of TCM, scientific validation for angina is lacking, and evidence strength is low.
