Evidence supporting the use of: Rutaecarpine
For the health condition: Angina
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rutaecarpine is an alkaloid isolated from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Evodia rutaecarpa ("Wu Zhu Yu"). Its use to support or treat angina is grounded primarily in traditional medicine rather than modern scientific validation. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Evodia rutaecarpa has been used to "warm the middle," "dispel cold," and "alleviate pain," including chest pain that could be interpreted as angina. However, the evidence base consists mostly of historical use, case reports, and anecdotal accounts rather than controlled scientific studies.
Some preclinical pharmacological research suggests that rutaecarpine may have vasodilatory and anti-inflammatory effects, and potentially influences cardiovascular function by stimulating nitric oxide production or acting on calcium channels. Nonetheless, clinical trials specifically evaluating rutaecarpine for angina in humans are lacking. Systematic reviews and high-quality RCTs supporting its use for angina have not been published. Therefore, while rutaecarpine's use for angina is supported by a long history in TCM, scientific evidence validating this application is weak and limited to laboratory studies or animal models.
In summary, the use of rutaecarpine for angina is traditional, with limited and low-quality scientific data; it should not be considered an evidence-based treatment for this condition.
