Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Panax Notoginseng, also known as Sanqi or Tianqi in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for various health conditions, primarily for its effects on bleeding, cardiovascular health, and trauma. Its use in supporting or treating anorexia (loss of appetite) comes from traditional herbal formulas where Panax Notoginseng is sometimes included to “invigorate the blood” and “tonify Qi,” which in TCM theory may indirectly support appetite. However, the direct use of Panax Notoginseng for anorexia is not prominent in classical texts, and it is typically used in combination with other herbs rather than as a standalone treatment for appetite loss. There is minimal modern scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for anorexia specifically. The traditional evidence is weak and mostly indirect, as it is more often used for conditions involving blood stasis or injury. Contemporary research on Panax Notoginseng focuses on cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects, rather than appetite stimulation or the treatment of anorexia. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent for its use in multi-herb formulas for overall health improvement, robust evidence—either traditional or scientific—for its use specifically in anorexia is lacking.
