Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Alchornea floribunda is a plant traditionally used in West and Central African herbal medicine, including for its purported antimicrobial properties. Ethnobotanical reports indicate that various parts of the plant—especially the roots and leaves—have been used to treat infections and wounds, suggesting a traditional use as a natural alternative to antibiotics. Limited laboratory studies have investigated the antimicrobial activity of Alchornea floribunda extracts. Some in vitro studies have shown mild to moderate inhibitory effects against certain bacteria and fungi, but these findings are preliminary and not robustly validated in clinical settings. There is no substantial clinical or pharmacological evidence to officially support its use as a replacement for conventional antibiotics. Thus, while traditional use does exist and some early scientific inquiry suggests potential, the overall evidence remains weak and inconclusive, and Alchornea floribunda should not be considered a validated alternative to antibiotics based on current knowledge.
