Allium tuberosum Rottl., commonly known as garlic chives or Chinese chives, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia. Traditionally, various Allium species (including A. tuberosum) have been valued for their purported ability to combat infections and support the immune system. In traditional Chinese medicine, A. tuberosum seeds and leaves have been used for their supposed antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and the plant has sometimes been applied to minor wounds or infections. However, the specific use of A. tuberosum as a direct alternative to antibiotics is primarily rooted in tradition rather than strong scientific validation.
From a scientific perspective, there are some in vitro studies suggesting that extracts of A. tuberosum possess mild antibacterial activity against certain bacterial strains, likely due to their content of sulfur-containing compounds similar to those in garlic (Allium sativum). However, these studies are limited, and the potency is generally much lower than conventional antibiotics.
