Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bauhinia variegata, also known as mountain ebony or Kachnar, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional systems in India and Southeast Asia. It has been used for a variety of ailments, including infections, wounds, ulcers, and inflammatory conditions, where its purported benefits are often attributed to its antimicrobial properties. Traditional practitioners have employed decoctions or extracts from its bark, flowers, and leaves to treat skin infections and other minor infectious conditions.

Scientific studies have begun to investigate these claims, and some in vitro research has demonstrated mild to moderate antibacterial activity from extracts of Bauhinia variegata against certain bacterial strains (such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli). The putative mechanism is thought to involve phytochemicals like flavonoids, tannins, and saponins found in the plant. However, these findings are preliminary, mostly limited to laboratory studies, and have not translated into robust clinical evidence of efficacy in humans as an alternative to antibiotics. No major clinical trials have substantiated its use as a replacement or significant adjunct for standard antibiotic therapy. Therefore, while the traditional use is well-documented, scientific validation remains limited, and it should not be considered a proven alternative to antibiotics.
