Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bee hive products, particularly honey and propolis, have been studied as alternatives or adjuncts to antibiotics due to their antimicrobial properties. Scientific research has demonstrated that honey, especially Manuka honey, exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against various pathogens, including antibiotic-resistant strains like MRSA. The antimicrobial effects are attributed to factors such as osmotic pressure, hydrogen peroxide content, low pH, and the presence of bioactive compounds like methylglyoxal. Propolis, a resinous substance produced by bees, also shows activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses, largely due to its flavonoids and phenolic acids. Several in vitro and some in vivo studies support the use of these bee hive products in wound healing, oral infections, and as topical agents. However, while laboratory and small clinical studies suggest potential benefits, high-quality, large-scale clinical trials are limited. Thus, although bee hive products are scientifically validated to possess antimicrobial properties and show promise as antibiotic alternatives or adjuncts, conclusive clinical recommendations await further robust evidence. Bee hive products are not a direct replacement for antibiotics in severe infections, but they may offer supportive or preventive benefits, especially in topical and mild cases.
