Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bidens pilosa, also known as Spanish needle, is a medicinal plant widely used in traditional medicine for its antimicrobial properties. Scientific research has provided some validation for its use as an alternative or adjunct to antibiotics. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts from B. pilosa possess antibacterial activity against a range of pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The bioactive compounds thought to contribute to these effects include polyacetylenes, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds. Animal studies have also shown that B. pilosa extracts can reduce bacterial loads and improve outcomes in infected models.

However, while the antimicrobial activity is notable, most studies are preclinical (laboratory or animal-based), and robust human clinical trials are lacking. Traditional use of B. pilosa for infections in various cultures supports its historical application, but scientific validation is still emerging. Its use as a direct substitute for antibiotics in serious infections is not recommended due to the absence of sufficient clinical evidence. Nevertheless, the plant's demonstrated in vitro and in vivo antibacterial effects make it a promising candidate for further research as a complementary or alternative antimicrobial agent.
