Copaiba oil is traditionally used in South American herbal medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Scientifically, several in vitro studies have confirmed that copaiba oil and its primary constituent, β-caryophyllene, possess antibacterial and antifungal activity against a range of pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. However, the majority of these studies are laboratory-based and use concentrations not typically achieved through topical or oral use in humans. There is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans directly comparing copaiba oil to standard antibiotics or validating its efficacy as a replacement or support for antibiotic therapy. Therefore, while there is preliminary scientific evidence suggesting antimicrobial effects, the evidence remains limited (rated 2/5), and it should not be considered an alternative to antibiotics in evidence-based medical practice. More research, especially clinical trials, is needed to establish safety, efficacy, and dosing protocols for therapeutic use against infections in humans.
