Flavonoids are a diverse group of plant polyphenols found in fruits, vegetables, and certain beverages. They have been extensively studied for their antimicrobial properties, leading to interest in their potential as alternatives or adjuncts to antibiotics. Scientific research demonstrates that flavonoids can inhibit the growth of a variety of pathogenic bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Mechanisms proposed include disruption of bacterial cell walls, inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis, and interference with bacterial quorum sensing and biofilm formation. Some flavonoids, such as quercetin and epigallocatechin gallate, are particularly noted for these effects.
However, most evidence to date comes from in vitro (laboratory) studies, with fewer in vivo studies or clinical trials confirming efficacy in humans. There is also emerging research suggesting that flavonoids may enhance the effectiveness of conventional antibiotics, potentially reversing resistance or reducing required dosages. Despite this, flavonoids are not currently recommended as stand-alone antibiotic alternatives in clinical guidelines, due to limited clinical trial data and concerns about bioavailability and pharmacokinetics.
