Fomes fomentarius, also known as tinder fungus or hoof fungus, has a history of use in folk medicine, including as a wound dressing and for other antimicrobial purposes. Modern scientific studies have investigated its potential as an alternative to antibiotics due to its content of bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides, triterpenes, and phenolic compounds. In vitro research has demonstrated that extracts from Fomes fomentarius exhibit antimicrobial activity against several bacterial species, including both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. For example, studies have shown inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli using ethanol and methanol extracts of the fungus. The antimicrobial mechanisms are thought to involve disruption of bacterial cell walls or inhibition of microbial enzymes.
