Honey, particularly from certain varieties like Manuka honey, has been studied for its antimicrobial properties and is considered a scientifically validated alternative or adjunct to antibiotics in some contexts. The antimicrobial activity of honey is attributed to its low pH, high osmolarity, hydrogen peroxide content, and presence of bioactive compounds such as methylglyoxal in Manuka honey. Research has demonstrated honey's effectiveness against a range of bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant strains like Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Clinical studies have shown benefits of honey in wound healing, where topical application can reduce infection rates and promote tissue repair, sometimes outperforming conventional antibiotics for superficial wounds and burns. However, systemic use of honey as an antibiotic replacement is not supported by substantial clinical evidence, and its effectiveness is primarily limited to topical applications. The evidence base, while promising, is moderate (rated as 3/5) due to variability in honey composition, study quality, and lack of large-scale randomized controlled trials for many indications.
