Indian tinospora (Tinospora cordifolia, commonly known as Giloy) has a long history of use in traditional Indian medicine, particularly Ayurveda, for supporting immunity and managing infections. It is not typically used as an antibiotic in the modern pharmacological sense, but rather as an immunomodulator or adjunct to enhance the body’s natural defenses. Ayurvedic texts describe its use in treating fevers, chronic infections, and general debility, suggesting it was valued for its broad-spectrum effects against illnesses that may have included bacterial infections before antibiotics were discovered.

Modern research provides some preliminary evidence of antimicrobial activity, but these are mostly in vitro studies demonstrating the plant’s extract can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and fungi. However, these effects are modest compared to conventional antibiotics, and robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Instead, most contemporary investigations focus on its immunostimulant properties, where it may help improve the host’s resistance to infections. Its use as an “alternative” to antibiotics is therefore not scientifically validated, but it remains a common traditional remedy in India for conditions that would now often be treated with antibiotics. In summary, while Tinospora cordifolia is traditionally used for infections, there is insufficient scientific evidence to recommend it as a standalone alternative to antibiotics.
