Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus reuteri
For the health condition: Antibiotics (alternatives to)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lactobacillus reuteri is a probiotic bacterium that has been studied as an adjunct or alternative to antibiotics, primarily for preventing or treating infections (such as gastrointestinal or respiratory infections). The scientific evidence supporting its use as an alternative to antibiotics is limited but growing. Some studies have indicated that L. reuteri can inhibit the growth of certain pathogenic bacteria through the production of reuterin, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial substance. Additionally, L. reuteri may help restore the balance of gut microbiota disrupted by antibiotic therapy, reducing the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and Clostridioides difficile infection.
However, while there are promising animal studies and some human clinical trials suggesting a beneficial effect, the current body of evidence is not robust enough to recommend L. reuteri as a direct replacement for antibiotics in the treatment of bacterial infections. Its most validated use is as a supportive therapy to reduce antibiotic side effects, not as a standalone alternative. Major clinical guidelines do not endorse L. reuteri as a substitute for antibiotics but may recommend it for certain gastrointestinal conditions associated with antibiotic use. Therefore, while there is a foundation of scientific investigation, the strength of evidence is moderate to weak, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
