Oligosaccharides, particularly prebiotic types such as fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and galactooligosaccharides (GOS), have been investigated for their supportive role during and after antibiotic treatment, rather than as direct alternatives to antibiotics. Scientific interest in oligosaccharides is rooted in their ability to stimulate the growth of beneficial gut microbiota, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, which are often depleted during antibiotic therapy. Several clinical studies have shown that prebiotic oligosaccharides can help restore microbiota diversity and function after antibiotics, potentially reducing the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and opportunistic infections like Clostridioides difficile. However, evidence for their use as a substitute for antibiotics in treating bacterial infections is lacking. Oligosaccharides do not exhibit direct antibacterial effects, but some in vitro and animal studies suggest they may enhance immune responses or prevent pathogen adhesion to mucosal surfaces, contributing to infection prevention rather than treatment. Overall, while there is moderate scientific support (rated 2/5) for using oligosaccharides to support gut health during or after antibiotics, there is no robust evidence to justify their use as standalone alternatives to antibiotics for treating infections.
