Oroxylum indicum has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. It is commonly used as a remedy for infections, respiratory diseases, and inflammatory disorders. The use of Oroxylum as an alternative or adjunct to antibiotics is largely rooted in its traditional application as an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent. Several ethnobotanical surveys and Ayurvedic texts document its use in treating wounds, throat infections, and dysentery, conditions often associated with microbial infections.

Scientific studies have identified the presence of flavonoids, baicalein, chrysin, and other phytochemicals in Oroxylum, some of which exhibit in vitro antibacterial activity against certain pathogens. However, these studies are mostly preliminary, limited to laboratory settings, and do not offer robust clinical evidence to support its direct use as an antibiotic alternative in humans.
