Phenolic acids are a diverse group of plant-derived compounds, including caffeic acid, ferulic acid, and gallic acid, which have been investigated for their antimicrobial properties. Scientific studies, primarily in vitro and in animal models, have demonstrated that certain phenolic acids exhibit antibacterial activity against a variety of pathogenic microorganisms. The proposed mechanisms include disruption of bacterial cell membranes, interference with quorum sensing, and inhibition of critical bacterial enzymes. Some research also suggests that phenolic acids may enhance the efficacy of conventional antibiotics by acting synergistically, potentially reducing the required dose of antibiotics and mitigating resistance development. Despite these promising findings, most evidence comes from laboratory experiments rather than large-scale human clinical trials. Thus, while the scientific rationale for phenolic acids as antibiotic alternatives or adjuncts is supported by preliminary data, there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to recommend their widespread use in place of antibiotics. Further research, including well-designed human studies, is needed to confirm their safety and efficacy in clinical settings. As of now, phenolic acids may be considered as experimental adjuncts rather than established alternatives to antibiotics.
