Self-Heal (Prunella vulgaris) has a long history of traditional use in various cultures, primarily for wound healing, sore throats, and as a general "healing" herb. In traditional Chinese medicine and European herbalism, it has been used topically and internally for infections and inflammation, which are sometimes related to bacterial causes. These traditional uses are the basis for its reputation as a "natural antibiotic" or supportive agent for infections. However, while some laboratory studies have identified antimicrobial activity in extracts of Self-Heal against certain bacteria (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus), these findings are preliminary and mostly in vitro (test tube) research. There are no robust clinical trials in humans demonstrating that Self-Heal can replace antibiotics or serve as a reliable alternative in treating bacterial infections. The evidence remains largely anecdotal and rooted in historical herbal practice rather than scientific validation. As such, Self-Heal is used as an alternative to antibiotics primarily on the basis of tradition, with only limited experimental support that does not currently translate to proven clinical effectiveness.
