Streptomyces cellulosae is a species of soil-dwelling actinobacteria known primarily for its ability to produce bioactive compounds, notably antibiotics. Historically, the genus Streptomyces is renowned as the source of many clinically important antibiotics, including streptomycin, tetracycline, and chloramphenicol. Streptomyces cellulosae specifically has been studied for its production of secondary metabolites with antimicrobial activity. Notably, it is the original producer of cephalosporin C, the parent compound of the cephalosporin class of antibiotics. Several studies have isolated and characterized antimicrobial agents from S. cellulosae with efficacy against Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria.

However, while the species is a proven source of antibiotics and thus can serve as a foundation for developing alternative antibiotics, direct use of S. cellulosae or its crude extracts as a treatment is not standard clinical practice. Instead, its role is in the discovery and industrial production of purified antibiotics. The evidence base for the antimicrobial activity of its metabolites is robust in laboratory and preclinical contexts, and cephalosporins derived from S. cellulosae are fundamental to modern medicine. Therefore, the use of Streptomyces cellulosae is scientifically justified as a source for antibiotic alternatives, but not as a direct therapeutic agent.
