Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Trametes (most commonly Trametes versicolor, also known as turkey tail mushroom) has been investigated for its antimicrobial and immune-modulating properties, which has led to interest in its use as an adjunct or alternative to antibiotics. Scientific studies have reported that extracts from Trametes versicolor possess compounds such as polysaccharopeptides (PSP, PSK) and phenolic compounds that may enhance host immune function. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated that Trametes extracts inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and fungi, and animal studies suggest that these extracts can modulate immune responses, potentially aiding in the defense against infections.

However, the bulk of research on Trametes focuses on its use as an adjunct to cancer therapy, rather than as a direct antibiotic alternative. Human clinical evidence directly supporting its use as a replacement or alternative to standard antibiotics is limited and inconclusive. The immune-enhancing effects, while promising, do not equate to broad-spectrum antimicrobial action seen in conventional antibiotics. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for exploring Trametes as a supportive agent in immune defense, robust clinical data for its use as an antibiotic alternative is lacking. The evidence rating reflects preliminary lab and animal data but insufficient human trials.
