Vietnamese sophora (Sophora flavescens), also known as "Khổ sâm" in Vietnamese, has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, including Vietnam and China. Traditionally, the root of this plant has been used to treat a variety of infections, such as dysentery, enteritis, and skin conditions, due to its perceived "heat-clearing" and antimicrobial properties. The usage is primarily rooted in herbal medicine systems rather than evidence-based science.

There are some scientific studies that indicate Sophora flavescens contains alkaloids such as matrine and oxymatrine, which have demonstrated antibacterial and antifungal activity in vitro. However, these findings are mostly limited to laboratory studies and do not translate directly into clinical efficacy as an alternative to antibiotics in humans. No robust clinical trials have established its effectiveness or safety as a substitute for antibiotics in treating bacterial infections. Toxicity at high doses is also a concern. Thus, while tradition strongly supports its use for infectious conditions, scientific validation is limited and the evidence is not strong enough to recommend it as a reliable alternative to antibiotics.
