Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that Vitamin C can modulate immune function, enhance phagocytosis, and potentially inhibit the growth of certain bacteria. Historically, Vitamin C has been used to prevent and treat scurvy, not as an antibiotic substitute.
Clinical studies in humans are limited and show mixed results. A few small trials have examined Vitamin C as an adjunct to antibiotics rather than a replacement, suggesting that it may reduce the duration or severity of some infections (e.g., respiratory infections) when used alongside standard treatments.
