Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Bifidobacterium (mixed) is scientifically used to support or reduce the side effects of antibiotics, particularly antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD). Antibiotics can disrupt the normal gut microbiota, leading to an imbalance that may result in gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, bloating, and discomfort. Bifidobacterium species are important components of the healthy human gut microbiota, and supplementation with mixed Bifidobacterium strains has been shown to help restore gut microbial balance during or after antibiotic use.

Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that probiotics containing Bifidobacterium, alone or in combination with other probiotics like Lactobacillus, can significantly reduce the incidence and duration of AAD in both adults and children. For example, a 2017 Cochrane review found that probiotic use, including Bifidobacterium strains, lowered the risk of AAD compared to placebo. Most studies report few to no adverse effects from probiotic supplementation.

Clinical guidelines from organizations such as the American Gastroenterological Association support the use of specific probiotic strains, including Bifidobacterium, for preventing AAD in some populations. However, the efficacy can depend on the probiotic formulation, dosage, and patient characteristics. Overall, the use of mixed Bifidobacterium to mitigate antibiotic side effects is well-supported by moderate to strong scientific evidence.
