Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Saccharomyces, particularly the species Saccharomyces boulardii, is scientifically validated for use in supporting or treating the side effects of antibiotics, mainly antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD). Numerous randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have demonstrated that S. boulardii supplementation can significantly reduce the incidence and duration of diarrhea associated with antibiotic use. The proposed mechanisms include restoration of the gut microbiota balance disrupted by antibiotics, inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, enhancement of mucosal immunity, and production of proteases that neutralize bacterial toxins.

The evidence base is robust: a 2015 Cochrane review of 31 trials found that probiotics, including S. boulardii, reduced the risk of AAD by 52% compared to placebo, with S. boulardii being one of the most effective strains. Other meta-analyses have confirmed these findings, particularly in both adults and children. S. boulardii is generally well-tolerated, though its use is not recommended in severely immunocompromised patients due to rare cases of fungemia. In summary, there is strong scientific support for the use of Saccharomyces (specifically S. boulardii) to mitigate antibiotic-induced gastrointestinal side effects, especially diarrhea.
