Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Saccharomyces, most commonly in the form of Saccharomyces boulardii, is used to help prevent and treat antibiotic-associated side effects, particularly diarrhea. There is substantial scientific evidence supporting this use. Numerous randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated that S. boulardii can reduce the incidence and duration of antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) in both adults and children. The primary mechanism involves restoring gut microbiota balance disrupted by antibiotics, inhibiting pathogenic bacteria growth, and modulating immune responses.

Clinical guidelines, such as those from the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN), recommend S. boulardii as a probiotic option for preventing AAD. The evidence is strongest for S. boulardii CNCM I-745, a well-studied strain. Its use is considered safe in immunocompetent individuals, though caution is advised in immunocompromised patients due to rare cases of fungemia. Overall, the consistent results from high-quality studies and endorsements by professional organizations justify a high evidence rating for the use of S. boulardii to support individuals experiencing side effects from antibiotic therapy.
