Evidence supporting the use of: German Chamomile
For the health condition: Anxiety
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) has a long history of traditional use for calming and relaxation, but in recent years, there has been modest scientific investigation into its potential for supporting anxiety. Several small clinical trials and preclinical studies suggest that chamomile may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects, likely due to its content of apigenin and other flavonoids that can bind to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain.
A notable randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology (2009) investigated the efficacy of chamomile extract in patients with mild to moderate Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). The study found a modest but statistically significant reduction in anxiety scores compared to placebo. Another larger follow-up (2016) confirmed these findings, showing that chamomile extract was associated with a significant reduction in GAD symptoms over long-term use. Additionally, animal studies support the anxiolytic activity of chamomile extracts.
Despite these promising results, the number of high-quality human clinical trials remains limited, and most studies have small sample sizes and short durations. Therefore, while there is emerging scientific evidence supporting the use of German Chamomile for anxiety, it is not yet robust or definitive. Chamomile is generally considered safe for most people but can cause allergic reactions in some individuals, especially those allergic to plants in the Asteraceae family.
