Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus johnsonii
For the health condition: Anxiety
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lactobacillus johnsonii has garnered some scientific interest regarding its potential effects on anxiety, primarily through animal studies. The rationale is based on the concept of the gut-brain axis, where gut microbiota are thought to influence brain function and behavior. A handful of preclinical studies have investigated the impact of L. johnsonii on stress and anxiety-like behaviors in rodents. For example, supplementation with L. johnsonii in mice has been associated with reduced anxiety-like behaviors and modulated stress responses, possibly through effects on neurotransmitter systems or immune signaling pathways. However, these findings are preliminary.
There is currently very limited human research specifically examining L. johnsonii for anxiety. Most clinical studies on probiotics and anxiety have focused on multi-strain formulations, and few have isolated the effects of L. johnsonii. While some probiotic blends containing L. johnsonii have reported beneficial effects on mood or stress in small trials, it is difficult to attribute these effects to this strain alone.
In summary, while there is emerging animal research and some indirect human data suggesting that L. johnsonii may influence anxiety-related outcomes, the evidence is still limited and not robust. Well-designed clinical trials in humans are needed to determine the efficacy and specific role of L. johnsonii in supporting or treating anxiety.
