Evidence supporting the use of: Rosavins (mixed)
For the health condition: Anxiety
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rosavins are a group of active compounds found primarily in the root of Rhodiola rosea, a plant traditionally used in Eastern Europe and Asia for its adaptogenic properties. The use of Rhodiola rosea extracts (standardized to rosavins and salidroside) in supporting anxiety is primarily based on scientific studies, though the overall level of evidence remains modest (2/5).
Several preclinical studies and a limited number of small human clinical trials suggest that Rhodiola rosea, and by extension its rosavin content, may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects. Proposed mechanisms include modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, as well as reduction of the physiological stress response via effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Some human trials, such as a 2009 open-label study, reported reductions in anxiety symptoms among participants taking Rhodiola extract, but these studies often lack rigorous controls or are of short duration.
Systematic reviews (e.g., Ishaque et al., 2012) conclude that while initial results are promising, the number and quality of studies are insufficient to draw firm conclusions. Most existing trials are small, short-term, and often industry-sponsored. There is a need for more robust, well-powered, and independent clinical studies to confirm efficacy and safety.
In summary, while there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of rosavins (via Rhodiola rosea extract) for anxiety, it is preliminary and not yet definitive.
