Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Albizia species, particularly Albizia julibrissin (commonly known as mimosa or silk tree), have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for conditions related to mood, such as anxiety and depression. In TCM, the bark (He Huan Pi) and flowers (He Huan Hua) of Albizia are considered to "calm the spirit" and are traditionally used to treat symptoms such as irritability, insomnia, and emotional distress, which are often associated with anxiety disorders.

Scientific research on Albizia’s efficacy for anxiety is limited. Preclinical studies in animals suggest that extracts from Albizia species may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and sedative effects, possibly due to modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and GABA. However, these findings are preliminary, and robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The active compounds believed to contribute to these effects include saponins, flavonoids, and alkaloids.

In summary, the use of Albizia for anxiety is primarily justified by traditional and historical use rather than scientific validation. While early laboratory studies provide a rationale for further research, current evidence is insufficient to rate its efficacy highly or to recommend it as a primary treatment for anxiety disorders in clinical practice.
