Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

American Basil (Ocimum americanum), also known as hoary basil or wild basil, has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine in various cultures, particularly in regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. In these traditions, basil species—including American Basil—have been used for a variety of ailments, sometimes including symptoms associated with anxiety or nervousness, such as restlessness or insomnia. However, the evidence supporting its specific use for anxiety disorders is largely anecdotal and based on traditional herbal practices rather than robust scientific investigation.

Scientific studies directly evaluating American Basil for anxiety are lacking. Most research on anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects within the Ocimum genus has focused on Ocimum sanctum (Holy Basil or Tulsi), which has shown some promise in preclinical and small human trials. These findings do not automatically apply to American Basil, as the phytochemical profiles may differ. Thus, while the use of American Basil for anxiety is justified by tradition in some cultures and anecdotal reports, there is a notable absence of high-quality scientific evidence supporting its efficacy or mechanism for anxiety disorders. Overall, the traditional use exists, but the strength of supporting evidence is weak (rated 1/5).
