Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) has been used traditionally in aromatherapy and various cultural practices, including some Indigenous Australian uses, for its calming scent and supposed anxiolytic effects. The belief in its ability to alleviate anxiety is rooted primarily in these traditions and in the broader historic use of sandalwood oils (often Santalum album) in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicines. The calming action is attributed to its woody, soothing aroma, which is thought to promote relaxation and reduce stress when inhaled or used in massage oils.

However, scientific research specifically investigating Australian Sandalwood and its active compounds in the treatment or support of anxiety disorders is minimal. Most available studies focus on Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album), and even those offer only limited preliminary evidence for mild anxiolytic or sedative effects, chiefly through inhalation. There are essentially no robust clinical trials on Santalum spicatum for anxiety. Thus, current support for its use in anxiety disorders relies almost entirely on tradition and anecdotal reports, not on established scientific validation. The evidence rating is therefore low.
