Rating (out of 5): 2

Baikal Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine for various ailments, including anxiety and stress. In recent years, scientific interest has grown regarding its potential anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects. Some preclinical studies (animal and in vitro) have indicated that Baikal Skullcap extracts, particularly the flavonoids baicalin and baicalein, may interact with the GABAergic system in the brain—similar to how conventional anxiolytics like benzodiazepines work. These compounds have shown potential to reduce anxiety-like behaviors in animal models.

However, the evidence from human clinical trials is very limited. A small number of pilot studies and open-label trials have suggested possible benefits for anxiety, but these studies often lack rigorous controls, have small sample sizes, or use multi-herbal formulations, making it difficult to isolate the effects of Baikal Skullcap alone. Systematic reviews note the need for larger, well-designed randomized controlled trials to confirm efficacy and safety in humans.

In summary, while there is a scientific rationale and some promising preclinical findings, the current level of evidence supporting the use of Baikal Skullcap for anxiety disorders in humans is weak to moderate. It is not yet considered a proven or standard treatment based on available scientific data.
