Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium (mixed strains) has been investigated for its potential role in supporting or treating anxiety disorders, primarily based on the emerging concept of the gut-brain axis. Several preclinical animal studies and a handful of human clinical trials suggest that certain Bifidobacterium strains may influence mood and anxiety by modulating gut microbiota, reducing inflammation, and affecting neurotransmitter production. For example, a 2011 study by Messaoudi et al. showed that a probiotic combination containing Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus helveticus reduced psychological distress in healthy volunteers. Another small randomized controlled trial (2017, Allen et al.) found Bifidobacterium longum 1714 reduced stress and improved memory in healthy adults. However, evidence specifically targeting individuals with diagnosed anxiety disorders is limited and results are mixed. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses (such as those by Ng et al., 2018 and Reis et al., 2018) conclude that while probiotics, including Bifidobacterium strains, may have a modest effect on anxiety symptoms, the quality, size, and consistency of clinical data are currently insufficient to recommend them as a primary treatment. Thus, the use of Bifidobacterium for anxiety is supported by preliminary scientific studies, but strong clinical validation is lacking, and more rigorous trials are needed.
